It is scary to pick out your life plan. Mapping out your future for the next few decades is nerve racking. In truth, no one knows what they will be doing for the rest of their life or if they do it is rare that their plan works out. Especially from high school to the end of college. That is the time where there is the most pressure to make decisions about their lives and future. It is ironic, because they have to make such important decisions while they are the most unsure. Most people do change majors while in college and that is normal. Some people frown upon entering college with an undecided major, but in reality it can be one of the best choices to make.
It isn’t a bad idea to take a year off either. It’s a good idea to take a year off prior to a career or grad school. It will give you time to discover yourself and things you like to do. Perhaps it gives you a chance to travel and decide where you want to spend the next couple years. Parents or adults may not understand at first, they may tell you that you should start right away and get a head start. They are just misinterpreting the reason for taking a year off. If you take a year off, you will actually be one step ahead of other people because you’ll know who you are.
The most important thing when it comes to a career and rest of your life is being happy. You can’t follow a path that will only bring you success or money. Even though most people chase after those things, they are empty if you are unhappy. You won’t be able to fully enjoy life if you are working a job that makes you miserable. You don’t want to have to regret any decisions you make.
Don’t let anything pressure you into choosing a career and life plan too soon. It is a big decision to make, one that most people are never totally finished making. Life changes unannounced all the time. Its vary unlikely you will ever be totally sure about anything. You just have to live your life to the fullest and do what’s best for you. Careers may be meant to bring in money, but they should also bring you something. It is your career, no one elses.
