Wedding Photography Styles

The day you say “I do!” will be special. When planning your wedding, one of the most important decisions you will make is what photographer you will choose. The right photographer is key not just for that reason, but also because your photographer and his or her photography style can affect the flow of your big day. The following information can help you be sure to choose the right photographer for your big day.

“Traditional” Wedding Photography
This style of wedding photography is probably what you’ve seen most: poses are very formal, staged, and consist of people standing in a number of configurations with the wedding party and family. Members of the wedding party and family stand together in formal, staged poses while the photographer checks off the list of poses he or she wants to capture on film. The photographer often has a checklist of shots to get, and once those are finished, the subjects are free to return to the rest of the guests. While this style can help guarantee that no one is left out of the photos and allows people to know when their picture is being taken, the photos will generally look very posed.

Photo-journalistic Wedding Photography
A popular option in recent years for wedding photography is the photo-journalistic style. Photojournalism is creating a visual narrative of events. Unlike the traditional wedding photographer, a photo-journalistic photographer will not have a checklist of posed shots, but will instead follow the bride and groom and guests naturally through the day, and will therefore catch the traditional “must have” moments of the day on film. This style of photography is far less formal, and while the photographer will likely capture key moments common to all weddings, he or she will not intercede to stage photos to ensure that everyone has their picture taken. These candid shots can lend a feeling of spontaneity, but can be less predictable in how they will turn out..

Contemporary Wedding Photography
This style is the most nebulous of the wedding photography styles; unlike traditional photography, groups are not staged into set poses and given a countdown to the flash. While traditional photography involves formal poses and grouping, this style rarely includes such linear, portrait-style images. Unlike either, the photographer’s own artistic point of view will strongly direct the look of the photos. While the photography can be fun, the look of the photos will be neither spontaneous nor traditional, so the photographer’s point of view can take center stage. Time away from the guests for the posed photos can be a drawback of this style.

Some Photographers are quite versatile and incorporate a mixture of different styles into their photography. A good example is Hampshire wedding photographer, Cooper Photography
