The Cost of Newborn Diapers

I’ve always thought that newborn diapers were more cost effective than the other sizes. (If you don’t have kids, when you buy diapers, the larger the size, the fewer diapers you get per package, even though the cost is the same.) Of course, those savings mean nothing if you go through a lot of diapers, which is exactly what we were doing.

My little angel was was a pooping and peeing machine, and we were going through more diapers than I thought possible for something so small. And it wasn’t just the newborn diapers, either – the resources this child consumed was amazing. This baby was 1/15 my size, and creating twice as much laundry.

Of course, I knew before we even decided to have the baby that it would be expensive. The costs I associated with having a baby were a little different, and further away, things like braces and university. I didn’t think that a little baby would consume or cost that much. As it turns out, way more than I thought.

And now, I’ve become that guy. I’m the guy that clips coupons, not only for newborn diapers, but for anything else that might help offset these added costs of having a new baby. Then I get all my little coupons in an envelope and head off to do the shopping; what’s happened to me?

And I’m actually going through the grocery store flyers and making a list before I go, something I never did before I had a baby. The real reason I do this? Not to save money (although that is a plus) or help to get the money for all those newborn diapers. No, it’s because I’ve been running on less than three hours of sleep for going on three weeks now, and I’ll probably forget everything I came for if I go without a list.

And then I’ll just come home with newborn diapers. Package upon package of newborn diapers, because that, at least, I can remember without a list. So I make my list, and I’ve even gone so far as to actually wait for the flyers to be delivered every week. In order to make sure that I’m getting all the best deals, I go thorugh all the flyers and make a list of what I need to get from each store

Still, despite all the unexpected expenses and lack of sleep, I’m savoring it all, trying to commit every last moment to memory. Because someday very soon (and probably sooner than I think) I’ll come across one of those newborn diapers and be amazed that my child was ever small enough to fit into them. So I treasure each moment I have with her now, when my beautiful child is still small enough to fit into those impossibly small newborn diapers.
