Newborn Diapers: The Cost

Maybe I was naive, but I thought that since you get so much more per package, that newborn diapers were more cost effective. (For those of you who haven’t had a baby, the way diaper packages work is that the larger the size of the diaper, the less you get per package, even though it’s the same price.) When I saw how many we were actually going through, I realized that we weren’t actually saving any money.

My little angel was was a pooping and peeing machine, and we were going through more diapers than I thought possible for something so small. And we weren’t just going through the newborn diapers, either – we were going through everything. For something so small, the baby created more laundry than my wife and I combined.

I knew going in to this, theoretically, that having a baby was expensive. The costs I associated with having a baby were a little different, and further away, things like braces and university. Just how much could a little baby consume and cost? Way more than I thought; way, way more.

So now, I’ve turned into that guy. I’m the guy that clips coupons, not only for newborn diapers, but for anything else that might help offset these added costs of having a new baby. What happened to me? Now I get all my coupon organized and in an envelope, and go do the shopping.

And I’m actually going through the grocery store flyers and making a list before I go, something I never did before I had a baby. While it does save us money, the real reason I do this is not to offset the cost of buying newborn diapers. No, it’s more because of the fact that I’ve barely slept in three weeks and I’m liable to get to the store and forget what I went there for in the first place.

And then I’ll just come home with newborn diapers. Packages and packages of newborn diapers, because I know at least that we need those, even if I’ve forgotten everything else we need. So I’ve started making my list, and I wait anxiously for the flyers to be delivered each week. I go through the flyers, one by one, and make up my list of what I need to get by store so that I know I’m getting all the best deals.

Still, despite all the unexpected expenses and lack of sleep, I’m savoring it all, trying to commit every last moment to memory. Because I know that my beautiful baby won’t fit into those newborn diapers for long, that soon I’ll look back and wonder how she ever fit into something so small. I will hang on to each moment I have with my baby now, while my little child is small enough to still fit into those teeny-tiny newborn diapers.
