I’ve always thought that newborn diapers were more cost effective than the other sizes. (For those of you who haven’t had a baby, the way diaper packages work is that the larger the size of the diaper, the less you get per package, even though it’s the same price.) Then I saw how may newborn diapers we were actually going through and realized that the cost savings were negligible.

Our perfect little child was a pooping and peeing machine, and we were going through diapers like nobody’s business. And it wasn’t just the newborn diapers, either – the resources this child consumed was amazing. Such a wee little thing, but the baby created more laundry by herself than the rest of the family combined.

I wasn’t naive, I knew having a baby was really expensive. The costs I associated with having a baby were a little different, and further away, things like braces and university. Just how much could a little baby consume and cost? As it turns out, way more than I thought.

So now, I’ve turned into that guy. I’m the guy that clips coupons, not only for newborn diapers, but for other things as well, to help offset the added cost of our little bundle of joy. How did this happen? I now put all my coupons in an envelope so that I’m organized when I get to the store.

And I’m also making a list before I go to the grocery store; not only that, but I’m even using the flyers to make my list. While I’m sure this also helps us save money, trying to offset the cost of the newborn diapers is not the motivation here. No, it’s because I’ve been running on less than three hours of sleep for going on three weeks now, and I’ll probably forget everything I came for if I go without a list.

And then I’ll just come home with newborn diapers. I know at least that we need those, even if I’ve forgotten everything else, so I’ll just buy package after package of newborn diapers. So I’ve started making my list, and I wait anxiously for the flyers to be delivered each week. I go through the flyers, one by one, and make up my list of what I need to get by store so that I know I’m getting all the best deals.

Still, despite all the unexpected expenses and lack of sleep, I’m savoring it all, trying to commit every last moment to memory. Because I know that my beautiful baby won’t fit into those newborn diapers for long, that soon I’ll look back and wonder how she ever fit into something so small. So I treasure each moment I have with her now, when my beautiful child is still small enough to fit into those impossibly small newborn diapers.

My little angel was was a pooping and peeing machine, and we were going through more diapers than I thought possible for something so small. And it wasn’t just the newborn diapers, either – the resources this child consumed was amazing. This baby was 1/15 my size, and creating twice as much laundry.

Of course, I knew before we even decided to have the baby that it would be expensive. The costs I associated with having a baby were a little different, and further away, things like braces and university. I didn’t think that a little baby would consume or cost that much. As it turns out, way more than I thought.

And now, I’ve become that guy. I’m the guy that clips coupons, not only for newborn diapers, but for anything else that might help offset these added costs of having a new baby. Then I get all my little coupons in an envelope and head off to do the shopping; what’s happened to me?

And I’m actually going through the grocery store flyers and making a list before I go, something I never did before I had a baby. The real reason I do this? Not to save money (although that is a plus) or help to get the money for all those newborn diapers. No, it’s because I’ve been running on less than three hours of sleep for going on three weeks now, and I’ll probably forget everything I came for if I go without a list.

And then I’ll just come home with newborn diapers. Package upon package of newborn diapers, because that, at least, I can remember without a list. So I make my list, and I’ve even gone so far as to actually wait for the flyers to be delivered every week. Yes, our little bundle of joy was a pooping and peeing machine, and we were going through newborn diapers like crazy. And we weren’t just going through the newborn diapers, either – we were going through everything. For something so small, the baby created more laundry than my wife and I combined.

Of course, I knew before we even decided to have the baby that it would be expensive. But the things I was thinking of were a little further away, like needing to get braces or going to university. Just how much could a little baby consume and cost? A whole lot, as it turns out.

I never thought it would happen, but I became that guy. I’m the guy that clips coupons, not only for newborn diapers, but for other things as well, to help offset the added cost of our little bundle of joy. How did this happen? I now put all my coupons in an envelope so that I’m organized when I get to the store.

And I’m actually going through the grocery store flyers and making a list before I go, something I never did before I had a baby. While I’m sure this also helps us save money, trying to offset the cost of the newborn diapers is not the motivation here. No, it’s because I’ll come home without anything if I go without a list; I’ve barely slept in three weeks and my brain isn’t functioning properly.

And what I’d probably end up with is just more newborn diapers. I know at least that we need those, even if I’ve forgotten everything else, so I’ll just buy package after package of newborn diapers. So I’ve started making my list, and I wait anxiously for the flyers to be delivered each week. Then I go through them, very methodically, and make a list of what I need to get from each store so that I get all the best deals.

Know when NOT to use coupons. When is a coupon not a good deal?Knowing this can be as helpful to you as the discount code itself. In most cases, the generic version of what you’re buying is cheaper than the more expensive counterpart even WITH a coupon. You may be asking yourself, “So why even bother? Why not just purchase generics?” You will need to become coupon-savvy in order to recognize when coupons are a good deal and when they’re not. Coupons work best when they’re combined with another deal or are doubled. Carry a small calculator in your purse to help you calculate the price per unit when you’re shopping.

Combine coupons with in store-sales and two-for-ones. I recently bought two boxes of Cheerios cereal. They were on sale at the grocery store for 2 for $3. I also used two $1 off coupons I had, saving an additional $2.My cost per box: only fifty cents. Normally, without the coupon, each box is at least $3. Cool, huh? A lot of grocery stores also offer “in store” coupons. Use your own coupons in addition to these to save even more.

Find a store that will double your coupons. If your town doesn’t have one, it may be worth a short drive to another town to a store that does. If making a special trip, be sure to call in advance to see if the store has restrictions on doubling coupons. Some stores will only double coupons under $.50, some only double coupons on certain days of the week.

Buy the smallest size. Most people are under the impression that you will save more by buying in bulk.When using a voucher, this usually isn’t true. What you will need to consider is the price per ounce. Here is an example of what I mean:

Without Coupon:

Diapers 28 count package: Price: $7.00 Cost per unit: $0.25

Diapers 56 count package: Price: $13.00 Cost per unit: $0.23

With Coupon:

Diapers 28 count package: Price: $7.00 – $1.50 coupon = $5.50 Cost per unit: $0.20

Diapers 56 count package: Price: $13.00 – $1.50 coupon = $11.50 Cost per unit: $0.21

While the price per ounce of the larger size is more economical without the coupon, the smaller size is the better buy with the coupon. Keep a small calculator in your purse or coupon caddy to help calculate the best deal.

Trade coupons with friends and online. Start a coupon group with women in your area. Let them know which items you need coupons for; and offer to trade with them. I have a friend who uses Pampers diapers, so whenever I see a coupon for that item I give it to her. In turn, she looks out for the items I use. To get started, e-mail 5-10 of your “thrifty” friends to see if they’re interested. Have each friend list 10-20 items that she always uses, and print out the lists. Keep the lists handy when you’re clipping coupons, and then pass on the coupons to your friends.

Other coupon sources. Some grocery stores have coupon bins within their store. Look for them near the customer service counter, or in the front of the store. Some libraries also have a coupon swapping bin. If your local library or grocer doesn’t, it doesn’t hurt to suggest it. Coupons are also now available in-store right next to the products themselves from machines sponsored by SmartSource.

Find coupons online. When you think of coupons, chances are you think of the kind that come as inserts in your Sunday paper. With the invent of the internet all sorts of other kinds of coupons are now available. You can download coupons from your computer and print them out. You can even find coupons being sold on eBay.

Organize! Make promo codes easy to file and easy to use. I used to have my coupons clumped together in an envelope in my purse. I could never find the coupons I needed, and I ended up throwing out expired coupons I could have used. I use a large plastic index-card box for my coupons now.I have it divided by categories such as: canned goods, baby products, clothers, cosmetics, foods, cereal, baking, Bed & Bath, books, magazine, dairy, etc. After serious couponing for a few months, you will discover which categories work the best for you.

After a little practice, you can become a coupon queen in your own right.Once you’ve mastered the art of coupon codes, you’ll never hit the grocery store without ‘em.

Maybe I was naive, but I thought that since you get so much more per package, that newborn diapers were more cost effective. (For those of you without children, every time you move up a size in diapers, you get fewer diapers in the package for the same price.) Then I saw how may newborn diapers we were actually going through and realized that the cost savings were negligible.

Yes, our little bundle of joy was a pooping and peeing machine, and we were going through newborn diapers like crazy. And we weren’t just going through the newborn diapers, either – we were going through everything. This baby was 1/15 my size, and creating twice as much laundry.

Of course, I knew before we even decided to have the baby that it would be expensive. But the things I was thinking of were a little further away, like needing to get braces or going to university. I mean, just how much could this little bundle of joy cost? As it turns out, way more than I thought.

So now, I’ve turned into that guy. I’m the guy that clips coupons, not only for newborn diapers, but for anything else that might help offset these added costs of having a new baby. What happened to me? Now I get all my coupon organized and in an envelope, and go do the shopping.

And I’m actually going through the grocery store flyers and making a list before I go, something I never did before I had a baby. While it does save us money, the real reason I do this is not to offset the cost of buying newborn diapers. No, it’s more because of the fact that I’ve barely slept in three weeks and I’m liable to get to the store and forget what I went there for in the first place.

The only thing I can remember that we need is the newborn diapers. I know at least that we need those, even if I’ve forgotten everything else, so I’ll just buy package after package of newborn diapers. So I make my list, and I’ve even gone so far as to actually wait for the flyers to be delivered every week. I go through the flyers, one by one, and make up my list of what I need to get by store so that I know I’m getting all the best deals.

Still, I’m trying to commit every last moment to memory, depsite the lack of sleep and extra strains on the pocketbook. Because someday very soon (and probably sooner than I think) I’ll come across one of those newborn diapers and be amazed that my child was ever small enough to fit into them. So I want to treasure these moments now, when my little child is small enough to still fit into those teeny-tiny newborn diapers.
